Title: New to Trauma: What We Can Learn From Foster Care Youth
Lead Presenter: Amy Sosanko
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Room: Jr. Ballroom B, DECC
Abstract: Students with experience in foster care have unique needs; with significantly lower retention and graduation rates, it is certain that exposure to trauma can have a dramatic impact on how a student engages with their academic world. Trauma-informed advising practices and robust campus support programs are mainstays in assisting students with personal trauma experiences, yet, as more students are exposed to community traumas such as racism, poverty, and COVID-19, exploration of of best practices for foster youth can help to better support our campus practices as a whole. This session will discuss research and theory behind personal and community trauma, and will end with an opportunity to design an action plan for advisors and practitioners to help student learners who have experienced trauma.
