Abstract: This presentation serves to help academic advisors and student affairs staff members develop foundational knowledge of social and cultural capital theories to better understand their students. As equity and inclusion have become an increased focus at higher education institutions, is in increasingly important for advisors to acknowledge and support the diverse backgrounds from which students come. Understanding the ways in which social and cultural capital have, and continue to impact students' educational experiences helps advisors provided targeted academic support and to better provide referrals and recommendations for campus support services.
