Title: Utilizing Exploratory Advising Techniques With Declared Majors
Lead Presenter: Stephen Sovilla
Date: October 09, 2021    Time: 9:15 am - 10:15 am
Room: 201/202, DECC
Abstract: Lack of clarity on an academic and career pathway can impact student success and persistence. The presenter will lead attendees through a presentation outlining the intentional advising model he used to address this disconnect with his political science FTIC students. How to incorporate personality and career assessments into individual and group advising with declared majors will be explained. The value added by this approach and how this was aligned with FTIC required first year advising will also be outlined. Attendees will also receive examples of how to assess the need for a similar approach in their major, and ways to assess student learning outcomes. Attendees will brainstorm strategies that could be used for their student populations, to facilitate tangible ideas and strategies to use in their practice!
