Title: Building a Trauma Informed Advising Practice For Racial & Ethnic Minority Students
Lead Presenter: Erica Brown-Meredith
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 2:15 pm - 3:15 pm
Room: 205, DECC
Abstract: The psychological and physiological effects of stress encountered by SOC (Students of Color) has been heightened during our nation's social and political divide. Racial trauma represents the emotional and physical symptoms that are the direct effects of 'systemic challenges faced by minority groups who have experienced historical trauma' (National Child Traumatic Stress Network). Researchers are finding that students of color are unmasking colorblind ideologies found in higher education settings. These revelations further compound the traumatic stress experience of SOC while trying to learn at a PWI. This conference workshop aims to discuss and apply the multifaceted effects of racial trauma on academic coaching, advising, and programming. Participants will assess racial trauma and develop strategies to incorporate traumatic stress management resources into advising practice.
