Title: Know When to Hold Em: Embracing Foster Youth and Adoptees in Academic Advising
Lead Presenter: Kang Li
Date: October 29, 2025    Time: 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Room: Milano Ballroom II, Promenade Level
Abstract: How do your identities impact your work? How do you respect who you are, what you are, and your lived experiences? How do you transform your lived experiences to support students who are similar or different from you in your role as an advisor?

Adoptees and foster care youth are often overlooked student groups that face unique barriers to success in higher education. Utilizing personal narratives, this presentation will discuss the barriers and challenges impacting these student groups, the development of personal and professional identities, and how our identities inform our role as advisors. Through personal reflection, storytelling, and group discussion, we will discuss strategies for identity development, community building, finding resources, and challenging the status quo to best support adoptees, foster care youth, and other student groups from minoritized and marginalized backgrounds.
