Abstract: Discussing Mental Health in College Populations: Implications for Faculty Advisors as Helpers!
The number of students seeking mental health services has dramatically increased over the last few years, and colleges and universities are struggling to address these challenges. A large percentage of college students meet the criteria for different psychological disorders during their college years (Sharp, 2011). This panel aims to help faculty advisors develop a more holistic understanding of serving students with mental health issues. It draws from a book chapter that synthesizes the large volume of mental health research for college students through a detailed review of programs, services, practices, and policies that influence student mental health. Discussion will center around the common findings in the book chapter and the recommendations to address the problem.
