Lead Presenter: Lisa Rubin
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 8:45 am - 9:45 am
Room: 252, DECC
Abstract: Head coaches play an important role in their influence on college athletes and their academic goals. Concerns have been raised about coaches' prioritizing athletic team success over academics. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the impact of head coach transition on teams' academic culture through the perspectives of athletic academic advisors. Interviews were conducted with 16 athletic academic advisors on their perceptions of the previous and new coaches' perspective on, and involvement with, academics, in addition to the transition period. Preliminary findings show college athletes struggled to adapt to changing program dynamics, with advisors often filling to leadership void to keep athletes academically focused. Athletic academic advisors also were quick to discern if the new coach was going to elevate or deteriorate the program's academic culture compared to predecessors.
