Title: Neurodiversity: Celebrating Differences, Supporting Success
Lead Presenter: Lori Slater
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 8:45 am - 9:45 am
Room: Jr. Ballroom D, DECC
Abstract: Seeing neurodivergent students on a college campus is becoming commonplace, however, knowing the exact population attending higher education is difficult to attain due to lack of self-reporting (Clouder et al., 2020). Neurodiversity, in its often nonvisible forms, includes autism, ADHD, and dyslexia among other neurological differences. Students' often multifaceted struggles with various aspects of college life, paired with advisor's unfamiliarity of how best to support them increases the need for greater knowledge and a new look at accommodations (Sarrett, 2017). In this interactive session, we will bring participants together to understand neurodiversity as a naturally occurring human variation; discuss the medical model of disability versus the social model; help participants identify needs within their institution for students who are neurodivergent and possible solutions for greater student success in terms of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
