Title: Administrator Perceptions of the Role of Academic Advising
Lead Presenter: Craig McGill
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 9:15 am - 10:15 am
Room: 252, DECC
Abstract: As leaders of higher education institutions, chief academic officers are in a position to affect how advising is structured and performed on college campuses. Yet little is known about how high-level administrators regard academic advising. Using an online instrument built from extant literature about the purposes and definitions related to academic advising, this study investigated how 181 chief academic officers at two-year and four-year public and private institutions in the U.S. viewed academic advising roles. Overall, our findings suggest administrators acknowledge the value of advising in promoting retention and completion, but may not share some of the elevated and professionalized aspects of the role of advisors.
