Title: Supporting First-Year STEM Students' Belonging With STEM Peer Mentors
Lead Presenter: Ellen Hokkanen
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Room: Exhibit Hall A
Abstract: First year students are provided numerous supports for their academic success, but often feel disconnected from the community at their college or university. To help students build belonging, we developed a STEM Peer Mentors program in which we placed upper-class STEM Students into our first-year STEM seminar courses. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the development, implementation, and results of the first cohort of STEM Peer Mentors and how the program has supported our goals to improve retention within our STEM programs and at the university. Current challenges and next steps will be addressed, including possible implementation of the program within different programs and university wide.
