Title: Virtual Pivot: Advising High-Achieving Students in an Online Setting
Lead Presenter: John Blaine
Date: October 09, 2021    Time: 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Room: 260/261, DECC
Abstract: COVID-19 has disrupted every aspect of higher education. In-person interactions are limited or nonexistent, and students are facing increased anxiety, stress, and isolation. Many of our students have planned out their entire college careers in order to take advantage of many opportunities and prepare for post-college pursuits, but as a result of shutdowns have found themselves unable to participate in opportunities including studying abroad, completing shadowing hours, conducting research in a lab or performing in musical ensembles. Often, high-achieving students struggle when they cannot execute their plan, which can result in higher levels of anxiety and places increased pressure upon themselves to perform. This session will explore best practices for online advising, emerging trends, and how to meet the needs of high-achieving students through virtual advising.
