Title: Nudge: Academic Advisors as Choice Architects
Lead Presenter: Jeff Elliott
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 11:15 am - 12:15 pm
Room: Jr. Ballroom A, DECC
Abstract: 'Choice architecture' is a term describing structuring choices in a way that influences decisions. Behavioral economics, the study of decision-making, provide insight into how influence exists in advising relationships and how advisors can help students identify biases that affect the choices they make. Despite the best intentions to allow students to make their own decisions, academic advisors often (actively or passively) influence the way students approach their choices, and in doing so, may influence the decisions that those students make. This presentation will provide an overview of the concept of choice architecture and a review of some common cognitive biases that influence students. The presenter will then discuss ways in which advisors influence student choice and will lead a discussion about the ethical ramifications of 'nudging' students towards certain choices.
