Presentation Info and Handouts
Conference Year: 2021
Session #: 327(LEC)
Title: “I Don’t Know. What Can You Do With a Major In …?”
Lead Presenter: Art Esposito
Date: October 09, 2021    Time: 10:30 am - 11:30 am
Room: Zoom Room 5
Abstract: Many undeclared/exploratory students approach major and career decision-making from a teacher-centered position. Web pages that answer the questions, 'What Can I Do With a Major In...?' can cause problems: prescriptively matching a student's 'personality' with a major or career is not an approach consistent with 'teaching-centered advising'. Advisors using Holland's theory of career choice can help students match their interests, abilities, and career intentions to majors. However, prescriptive assertions made by the literature supporting the 'Holland Codes' can be misleading and limiting. This session will show how transformative education and self-authorship, as well as Holland's and Virginia Gordon's major and career exploration theories, can be used to guide students through deductive and self-reflective investigations to support their selection of a major.
