Abstract:
|
Using Teaching Advisors to Create an Inclusive Learning Environment for Historically Underrepresented Communities at Predominately White Institutions
While most argue that a diverse learning environment is ideal and can bring benefits to the larger campus community, some faculty still struggle with how to create a feeling of inclusion in the classroom setting (Booker & Campbel-Whatley, 2018). Some of the challenges affecting underrepresented minority (URM) students at Predominately White Institutions (PWIs) are feeling invisible, environments that promote biases, lack of role models/mentors, isolation, culture shock, etc. Validation Theory offers a new way to theorize how URM students find success in college, especially for those who find it difficult to get involved, had been invalidated in the past, or had doubts about their ability to succeed (Linares & Munoz, 2011). |
