Abstract: Deficits Re-Imagined: Strategies for Cultivating Strengths-Oriented Conversations in Advising

Guiding students' efforts to harness their unique strengths as they pursue challenging personal, academic, and career goals in postsecondary education is central to the work of advising. Although strengths-oriented approaches to teaching and advising are beneficial for all students, they are critical for neurodivergent learners, who often have difficulty advocating for themselves effectively and are prone to adopting a fixed mindset in relation to their own learning. Through discussion, group activities, and student case study analysis and reflections, participants will explore a common language and set of practices they can use to cultivate students' strength development over time in their work with both neurotypical and neurodivergent learners. This presentation is relevant to the work of advisors at all levels and institutions.
