Title: Supporting Latinx Students: Reflecting on Biases, Understanding Identity, and Building on Strengths
Lead Presenter: Ana Frega
Date: October 09, 2021    Time: 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Room: Zoom Room 5
Abstract: Latinx students are the fastest growing college population, with one of the lowest graduation rates, and low representation among advisors. As the country and higher education examine their racial and ethnic biases, advisors are called to do the same. This session will discuss common misunderstandings about the Latinx identity, how advisors can reframe their own thinking about who is Latinx and what that means, how to avoid missteps, and how to work respectfully with identities different from one's own.

Attendees will learn about the diversity within the Latinx community and its educational experience; explore their own unconscious biases about this population; learn how to apply resources to support Latinx students; and hear about how to collect information and resources to support Latinx students.
