Room: Jr. Ballroom C, DECC
Abstract: Appreciative Advising practices and purposeful choice empowers students to make early, informed choices about majors and programs, and in doing so, increases their persistence to graduation. With an unheard-of 7.5 percentage gain in first-year retention in just two years, this presentation will discuss creating a seamless onboarding process with specific steps to identify students, their concerns, and guide them in making informed and purposeful major and career path choices. This new practice conducted during the pandemic increased advising efficiencies and was awarded the Regents' Momentum Year Award for Excellence in Advising and Student Success.

We will also discuss the critical components that led to the significant increase and how these strategies can be applied at your institution. Additionally, examples of the student, professional advisors, and other campus support department experiences will be shared.
