Is It Even Working? Implementing a Quality Assurance Program for Your Advising Department
We all know that effective advising is critical to student success, but how do we ensure the advising we are providing is effective? Trying to quantify the value of advisors by measuring the number of students assisted, we believe, does not adequately reflect an advisor's performance. We have implemented a quality assurance program that appraises our advising qualitatively by observing sessions, assessing the advisor's knowledge-base, and considering student feedback. Advisors have enjoyed the program and view it as an opportunity to showcase their abilities and encourage their colleagues. We have found tremendous success with this initiative and it has led to a large, cohesive team all providing consistent and effective advising.
