Abstract:

Won't you be my neighbor?: An Approach to Student Development
In a world in which tragic events seem to occur on a daily basis, there is someone to whom we as higher education professionals can turn for inspiration, Fred Rogers of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Although the TV show was geared toward elementary and pre-school age children, the approach that Fred Rogers took can help to inform advising practices. Instead of tying shoes, higher education professionals teach students how to register for courses, join student clubs on campus, select their majors, and make other decisions affecting their lives. In this session, participants will learn how to apply the lessons from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood to Magolda's Path to Self-Authorship theory, discuss the benefits of this approach, and brainstorm how to implement this approach at any institution. |
