Title: Doubling Down on Success: Academic Advising and Faculty/Student Mentoring, An Integrated Approach
Lead Presenter: Deborah Stephens
Date: October 28, 2025    Time: 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Room: Octavius Ballroom, Promenade South
Abstract: Although they support the same students, a major's academic advisor(s) and faculty members are often housed in different locations and report to different supervisors. This presentation will show how one technical arts/digital media academic advisor and their faculty members created, and refined, a faculty/student mentorship program which works cohesively with academic advising. The integrated model enhanced engagement between students and faculty, fostered academic belonging within the major, improved responsiveness to student feedback, and increased student retention. Participants will receive a basic model of the program and a more advanced model of the program (which involves some curricular involvement). Tips will be provided on increasing faculty investment in mentorship and incorporating fun events into a similar integrated model.
