Title: Live Long and Prosper: Advisor Longevity and Community

Room: 233, DECC
Abstract: A substantial body of literature points to a positive relationship between student success and sociological factors such as sense of belonging, support, and community. Similar to student retention, advisor tenure is also positively influenced by a sense of belonging and community support. In an article on advisor burnout, Wilcox (2020) recommends, 'Seek out a professional community where you can share praise, happiness and humor with people you respect and connect with these people often.' This presentation will review theory surrounding support and how it can sustain advisors through the difficulties of a career that is stressful and prone to compassion fatigue and burnout, illustrated by examples of four distinct support communities. We will then discuss possible ways to set up support communities at other institutions.
