Lead Presenter: Jenny Gomez
Date: October 28, 2025    Time: 9:15 am - 10:15 am
Room: Neopolitan I, Promenade Level
Abstract: During the 2023-2024 academic year, over 1.1 million international students enrolled in U.S. higher education institutions, setting a record (IIE Open Doors Data, 2024). These students often face unique cultural and academic challenges. Academic advisors are vital in supporting them while fostering a culture of care. This presentation will focus on the most common obstacles international students encounter and offer practical strategies and resources that advisors can use to create an environment that enhances student success. Join a senior academic advisor and advising administrator with over 29 years of higher education experience and gain insight to help create supportive, equitable, and successful environments for international students in college. Our aim is to bring awareness to the unique challenges of undergraduate special populations at one of the nation's largest Hispanic-Serving preeminent state research institutions.
