Abstract:
|
Conversations about race, politics, and other social constructs can be difficult due to the emotional weight they often carry. Participants are frequently aware of potential negative consequences of saying the 'wrong' thing. This workshop aims to foster open dialogue by modeling how to have productive discussions on complex topics, focusing on removing barriers to honest and constructive feedback. We'll explore how understanding these constructs can impact academic advising by helping advisors empathize with students and better support their unique experiences. Advisors who grasp the influence of social constructs on student success will be better equipped to create a sense of belonging and offer guidance that respects students' diverse backgrounds. Participants will leave with a strategy to engage in effective dialogues, feeling empowered to advance critical discussions in their personal lives and on their campuses. |
