Abstract:

This presentation aims to introduce effective approaches for academic advisors to better support students majoring in the performing arts. These students are challenged with negative stereotypes and societal stigmas, as well as increased extracurricular and professional obligations while in school. They are also more prone to anxiety and burnout due to the personal and competitive nature of their chosen field of study. We will discuss our approaches to advising theatre students in a holistic manner that takes into consideration the demands, pressures, and uncertainties that performers face in a collegiate setting and entering the workforce. Our goal is to de-stigmatize 'the starving artist' stereotype and provide advisors with tools to help empower students in this unique field. |
