Abstract:
|
Orientation is often students' first substantive experience with their new academic program, and one that can make or break students' chances for success. Graduate program orientations can be uniquely challenging because graduate students have a specific set of needs and more complex demands on their time (Glazer & Murphy, 2015). While higher education professionals have an obligation to adapt and respond to the changing needs of the students they serve, how can graduate student advisors in particular work to ease transitions and enhance readiness?
In this presentation, we will explore one public research university's graduate School of Social Work's approach to orientation. We will explain how the Student Services staff uses a combination of virtual learning platforms and in-person, discussion-based sessions to set graduate school expectations, provide resources, and build community. |
