Abstract: It Ain't Broke, But We Can Still Fix It: Championing New Advisor Onboarding

As many institutions struggle to retain academic advisors, new advisor onboarding is more important than ever. A strong onboarding not only supplies valuable information but can provide support and community from an advisor's very first day. Presenters will introduce their newly implemented year-long onboarding course, including the challenges and steps taken to develop the content. This course was created within their university's Learning Management System (LMS) as it provided a user-friendly platform that was accessible, customizable, and easy to update.

This interactive workshop designates over 90 minutes for attendees to develop their own onboarding or training content to fit their institutional needs. The presenters will focus on the first 8 weeks of their onboarding because it can be used as new advisor training independent from the more robust onboarding. For those interested, content for the entire year will be shared with all attendees. This workshop is applicable for all levels of advisors and administrators from all types of institutions looking to revise or develop their own onboarding/training. Presenters will provide worksheets to aid attendees in content development. Attendees are encouraged to bring a computer.
