Abstract: Positive and Negative Possibilities: Exploratory Advising with Henri Bergson

How can we help co-create meaning using Henri Bergson's two senses of 'possibility'? In the negative sense of possibility, something is possible only when nothing is preventing it from happening. This sense of possibility easily shuts down aspirations when advisees encounter barriers such as enrollment controls. Conversely, a thing is possible in the positive sense when events happen and contribute to that thing's formation. An undecided advisee can struggle seeing themselves in a specific career because they haven't undergone formative experiences that will help them succeed in that career; they do not see their possibilities in the positive sense. Distinguishing between these two senses of possibility in how we speak to undecided advisees can help encourage major and career exploration.
