Conference Year: 2021
Session #: 062(LEC)
Title: Advising That Liberates: Centering Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion in Advising Training and Practice
Lead Presenter: David Griffith
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Room: 212, DECC
Abstract: Drawing on the work of Brazilian theorist and educator Paolo Freire, as well as concepts and techniques from the practices of appreciative, integrative, and inclusive advising, this presentation will lay out a framework for advising training and practice that will help individual advisers, and entire advising units move away from a transactional and customer service oriented model of advising, toward a student-centered, dialogue-based pedagogy of liberation that empowers marginalized students to take ownership of their educational journey by helping them to see, as Freire wrote, reality as 'changeable,' and, more importantly, that they can be agents of such change.
