Title: Culturally-Informed Machine learning in Academic Advising: Perspectives From the Global South
Lead Presenter: Miriam Khalil
Date: October 28, 2025    Time: 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Room: Virtual 1
Abstract: This proposal explores the integration of machine learning (ML) in academic advising with a focus on cultural considerations in the Global South. Traditional advising models often lack flexibility and personalization, particularly in regions where cultural contexts and family dynamics significantly influence student needs. By leveraging ML tools such as natural language processing (NLP) and sentiment analysis, we can enhance advising efficiency and tailor guidance to diverse student populations. The presentation will cover practical applications of ML in advising, highlight the importance of cultural sensitivity, and address ethical concerns such as data privacy and algorithm bias. Participants will gain insights into implementing ML-driven advising systems, understand the challenges, and learn strategies to ensure ethical use. This approach aims to improve student retention and success rates by providing personalized and proactive support.
