Abstract:
|
Motivation is a major contributor to whether college students attend class, complete assignments, or remain in good academic standing. A common frustration in advising is that 'students just aren't motivated,' but there is more to motivation than what appears on the surface. This session will guide advisors in understanding and applying motivational principles, using expectancy-value theory as a framework for exploring self-efficacy and task value as key factors. We will delve into four sources of self-efficacy, while also uncovering the three forms of task value. Together, these motivational principles inspire action by addressing students' underlying questions of 'can I do this?' and 'why does it matter?' Advisors will gain theory-driven insights and practical strategies to build student motivation, bringing fresh perspectives to academic advising and coaching conversations. |
