Title: Taking Space and Making Space: Fatness in Academic Advising
Lead Presenter: Wendy Schindler
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Room: Jr. Ballroom A, DECC
Abstract: What does it mean to inhabit a fat body in the academy? Why is it still acceptable to discriminate against fat people? Fat is a descriptor, it's not a dirty word. In this session, we will discuss the real-life implications in academic advising; fat theory and history; discrimination law; fat oppression, exclusion, and acceptance; and fat identities. More importantly, we will take up space as those who embody fatness. We will provide space for other fat advisors to be heard. In championing ourselves, we can go on to empower our students. Ultimately, we hope to continue a dialogue that advances the social justice issue of fatness within academic advising and beyond.
