Title: Advising Strategies to Combat Challenges in Teacher Education Programs
Lead Presenter: Dara Hall
Date: December 31, 1969    Time: 6:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Room:
Abstract: Teacher preparation program advising is complex in light of the many academic formats offered to become a teacher, state mandated licensure requirements, and the expectation for students to become competent in content, pedagogy, and professional dispositions. In addition to these challenges, students experience many barriers to success, both financial and academic roadblocks, that affect their retention. Programs in education also have a lot of work to do to address recruiting and retaining BIPOC students to become teachers. While there is a notable gap in the research addressing best practices in advising in teacher preparation programs, this session will provide useful strategies, aligned with NACADA's best practices for advisors, and participants will be able to consider these challenges and how to alleviate them within their own settings.
