Title: A Long Road Ahead: Enhancing Resilience in Secondary Admission Programs Using Appreciative Advising
Lead Presenter: Sabrina Materie
Date: October 28, 2025    Time: 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Room: Octavius Ballroom, Promenade South
Abstract: This interactive poster session explores the use of appreciative advising with secondary admission programs at Rhode Island College, focusing on supporting students navigating the complexities of intended majors where admission into the major of choice is not guaranteed. Learn how professional academic advisors foster resilience in the face of setbacks, guide goal articulation, and introduce exploration of alternate paths. We share our advising cycle of applying appreciative advising alongside application deadlines, institutional policies, and the Hope Scholarship, a retention-based scholarship available to Rhode Island residents. Strategies like strengths recognition and parallel planning are highlighted. Attendees will leave with take-away materials and practical insights on applying this approach to enhance retention and student success in similar programs!
