Title: Thriving with Large Caseloads: Strategies for Effective Advising in High-Demand Environments
Lead Presenter: Ilana Rivkovich
Date: October 29, 2025    Time: 11:15 am - 12:15 pm
Room: Verona/Turin/Trevi, Promenade Level
Abstract: Last academic year, our advising team at a large public research university faced larger-than-usual caseloads, with each advisor supporting over 400 advisees. Determined to not only survive but thrive, the team implemented a variety of methods and strategies to effectively manage these demands and maintain a high standard of care. Through collaboration and resourceful problem-solving, the team ensured that student needs were met without overextending the advising staff. This presentation aims to share the approaches we used-including hold selections, peer advising, group advising, email advising, technology assistance, online modules, and flexible schedules-and discuss how these contributed to our success. We will also explore current research, solicit feedback, and encourage the sharing of resources and ideas to better manage large advising caseloads.
