Title: Advising Jackal or Giraffe? The Nonviolent Communication Approach in Advising
Lead Presenter: Shannon Burton
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Room: 236, DECC
Abstract: As academic advisors and students returned to campuses as restrictions lifted, many, if not all, return impacted by the political climate, racial injustices, COVID, and more. Subsequently, they will need spaces of compassion and empathy in efforts to adjust to the new normal. Nonviolent Communication (NVC) offers an approach to interacting with one another from an open and empathetic frame. This session will explore the basic tenets of NVC, offer an opportunity to practice empathetic listening, and provide resources to learn more so that in difficult conversations and in difficult moments, one can communicate compassionately.
