Title: Exploring Student Experiences With Overcoming Academic Probation
Lead Presenter: Christopher Cummings
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 8:45 am - 9:45 am
Room: 204, DECC
Abstract: This session highlights a qualitative exploration of participant journeys from placement on academic probation to academic success at a small, public institution. A review of literature highlights this developmentally-oriented study's place within the body of research on college student retention and persistence. Chosen methodology, themes from participant stories, and implications for practice in advising with students on academic probation will be discussed. Session participants will reflect upon the value of working together with students to purposefully and systematically capture their stories as a dual strategy for empowering students and using qualitative data to guide practice. Further, participants will have the opportunity to brainstorm and share plans for using student voices to guide their practice as academic advisors who support students on academic probation.
