Title: Supporting College Students With Disabilities on Study Abroad Programs in Japan and Beyond
Lead Presenter: Linda Oshita
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Room: Zoom Room 3
Abstract: Japan is becoming a popular study abroad destination among U.S. college students (Institute for International Education, 2018). Recently, the numbers of U.S. college students with disabilities who go on study abroad programs (SAPs) have steadily increased. Providing disability support services (DSS) on university campuses in Japan is a relatively recent development and coordinating such services for SWDs from English-speaking countries can be a complicated process. However, advisors' understanding of the study abroad destination context as it applies to DSS can help minimize potential problems in service delivery. Advisors of SWDs at home institutions play a significant role in helping SWDs plan for a smooth transition to their study abroad institution. Although this presentation focuses primarily on the US-Japan experience, the recommended suggestions for advisors can be adapted to fit other study abroad contexts.
