Title: Bridging the Divide for Transfer Students
Lead Presenter: Nasim Schwab
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 9:15 am - 10:15 am
Room: 236, DECC
Abstract: Transfer students have already been in college right? So they know how to be a successful college students right? Not always true at a 4-year institution. Transfer student transitions are often overlooked because we assume that they do not need first-year experiences. However, transfer students may encounter barriers when transferring from one institution to another regardless of size and institution type. This session will cover the implementation, challenges, and successes of transitional programs such as a peer mentor program, 'FYE' course, and a transfer student Living Learning Community designed to better engage Virginia Tech's transfer student population. Session attendees will interact with the presenters and their peers to consider takeaways or avenues of approach that may benefit transfer students on their respective campuses.
