Title: Dismantling Race & Institutional Oppression at a Rural PWI
Lead Presenter: Erica Brown-Meredith
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Room: Exhibit Hall A
Abstract: Rural PWIs present unique characteristics that impact how Black students perceive their experiences on campus and persist at the institution. The need was recognized to evaluate the experiences of Black students in these unique settings to determine how various institutional and environmental factors, like student mental health, academic retention, and sense of belonging on college campuses, influences their academic success. This presentation is grounded in multicultural theories to help guide the interpretation and understanding of Black students' experiences, will examine how privileged individuals can help dismantle structural oppression that impacts Black students at rural PWIs, and discuss implementation of culturally sensitive practices to improve academic success.
