Presentation Info and Handouts
Conference Year: 2021
Session #: 020(LEC)
Title: There is no ME in S.T.E.M.
Lead Presenter: Katherine Bush
Date: October 07, 2021    Time: 9:15 am - 10:15 am
Room: 232, DECC
Abstract: Advising majors that you aren't familiar with in your own educational background can be intimidating. Having little to no personal experience in the curricula or career paths can cause serious anxiety for advisors and cause discord in the advising relationship. This session will give advisors techniques to integrate career advising, best practices, and tools to discover more about the majors they advise. O'Banion stated students who know who they are and understand various vocational options that support their strengths, skills, interests, and passions, have higher potential to make decisions that have personal meaning (McCalla-Wriggins, 2009). Advisors who attend this session will be presented with case studies, engage in group discussion, and share their own best practices. This session will help new and continuing professional advisors build a toolkit to use in advising STEM majors.
