Critical Care: Proactive Advising as an Equity Strategy for Medical Students
Medical school is a rigid environment. This system is designed for mainstream, traditional, academically gifted students. If a student exists outside of these parameters medical school will be difficult, if not impossible, to complete. As my institution began a more holistic admissions process for medical students, focusing on attributes outside of test scores, additional supports and resources have been introduced. Proactive advising is one of those interventions that is making an impact for students.
During this presentation we will review the theory behind Proactive (Intrusive) Advising, discuss strategies to support underrepresented student populations in a high demand academic environment, and provide time to share additional ideas and approaches to working with this specific student population. |
