Title: Developing an Andragogical Practice of Advising: Supporting Adult Learners Through Tailored Advising
Lead Presenter: Pamela Anderson
Date: October 29, 2025    Time: 10:00 am - 11:00 am
Room: Pisa and Palermo, Promenade Level
Abstract: Advising adult learners requires a distinct approach that acknowledges their life experiences, career goals, and motivations. Traditional advising models often fall short when applied to adult learners. This presentation explores how integrating andragogical principles-commonly used in adult education-into advising can enhance retention, improve advisor-advisee relationships, and better support adult learners' unique needs. The session will examine the limitations of traditional advising models for adult learners and discuss how these models fail to account for the unique characteristics of adult students. The presentation will first introduce the six dimensions of andragogy, then demonstrate how to incorporate these practices into advising. By adding andragogy as an advising framework, advisors will be better equipped to support the academic success of adult learners and foster more effective, empowering, and equitable advising practices.
