Title: Developing an Advising Framework: Balancing Consistency and Autonomy for a Supportive Advising System
Lead Presenter: Amanda Niskode-Dossett
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 11:15 am - 12:15 pm
Room: Zoom Room 2
Abstract: "What is advising on your campus?" Learn how advisors used an equity-minded lens to create a framework answering this question for their campus. Our framework, z.umn.edu/advisingframework, helps students, advisors, and leaders understand what to expect of advising across a large campus while also honoring the autonomy and individuality of each advising unit. It identifies the key elements of a supportive, intentional, and consistent advising experience: a shared vision, mission, values, goals, learning outcomes, and core advising skills and methods. This session will focus on the process of developing a framework and provide strategies for implementation (training, tools, and a practice guide). Participants will discuss how this approach to developing a framework could be used across institutional types and advising models and identify steps to develop a framework for their own campus.
