Session #: 272(LEC)
Title: Professionalism with Personality: Netiquette and Student Communication in the Virtual World
Lead Presenter: Jana McCarthy
Date: October 09, 2021    Time: 8:00 am - 9:00 am
Room: Jr. Ballroom D, DECC
Abstract: Have you found yourself annoyed by that emoji in your student's email? Did you know that the use of ellipses has a different meaning online than it does in compositions? This session will explore online communication styles and how they come across to others. We will consider the question, 'Does professionalism outweigh the need for personality in virtual communication with students?' Participants will create their own list of netiquette do's and don'ts, and will leave this session with plans to apply netiquette and personal communication techniques with their students.

By engaging our students with proper netiquette and making a few tweaks to the way we interact, we can build more personal relationships while also exemplifying professionalism in communication. This session will show that we can all have professionalism with personality!
