Lead Presenter: Laura McGeehan
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 8:45 am - 9:45 am
Room: Zoom Room 4
Abstract: Career Mentoring of Underrepresented STEM Students for the Professoriate (CUSP) is a pilot program to prepare underrepresented minority Ph.D. students for careers in the professoriate, providing them with skills and tools to transition successfully from doctoral student to postdoctoral researcher to tenure-track faculty. CUSP Scholars will have 1:1 career mentoring with a Faculty Career Mentor from outside their home department and create an Individual Development Plan with their guidance. Additionally, CUSP Scholars will participate in career workshops and the National STEM Diversity Conference to foster a sense of community and belonging among participants, as well as introduce them to the broader community of URM scientists and academics. Evaluations by students and mentors, as well as long-term tracking of graduates for job placement, will serve as metrics for success and facilitate improvement in subsequent years.
