Title: Mastering the Dance: Using Motivational Interviewing to Build Self-Authorship
Lead Presenter: Michelle Tagorda
Date: October 09, 2021    Time: 9:15 am - 10:15 am
Room: Zoom Room 4
Abstract: Higher education is a time of exponential growth for our students. As our student's interests, goals, and experiences change, we must create a supportive and collaborative environment conducive to student's self-exploration. During motivational interviewing, the dance is referred to as the rhythm and timing to lean in and recognize when to lean back. Dancing is about being in motion, and we know our student's lives are constantly changing. By applying the principles and characteristics of motivational interviewing in advising, students can build their self-authorship and professional identity. Attendees will learn about the foundational components of motivational interviewing, how they are applied in advising a population of health students and reflect on the opportunities to apply the skill set in their own practice.
