Title: Co-Regulating Trust: Trauma-Informed Advising

Abstract: Trust is a crucial component of healing and change that student services professionals can role model by consciously adapting our work, within the professional boundaries of academic advising, to include intentional, trauma-informed practices. Participants will learn how to ethically apply the basics of Polyvagal and attachment theories to create supportive, inclusive spaces and encounters on campus and online. Trauma-informed practice empowers students by addressing micro-aggressions, power dynamics, and resilience.

Participants can expect a combination of theory lecture and experiential practice as well as a brief small group activity to reflect on implications for policy-making and policy-changing. Experiential activities will include attunement exercises such as mindful breathing, kinesthetic empathy, and mirroring which can be practiced and integrated within an academic advising framework.
