Abstract:
|
Research shows that career advising and academic advising are both integral to student success. Yet, half (50%) of college graduates have used careers resources and only 28% mentioned that their advisor had assisted in any post-graduation advising (Auter, 2018; Gallup, 2017a). In this presentation, the presenters, computer science advisors, will highlight the challenges and successes they encountered by incorporating career advising into their practice at a four-year institution. These experiences include embedding career exploration into their advising appointments, developing career readiness workshops (i.e. resume office hours), and collaborating with community and campus stakeholders to integrate career development into the academic curriculum (i.e. capstone course). By highlighting their experiences, audience members will 1) learn the importance of career advising for student success and 2) examine strategies and initiatives to implement career advising into their advising practice. |
