Abstract:

'Connected Advising': Weaving Relational Cultural Theory Into Our Advising Praxis
For many college students academic advisors are the first 'helpers'' they meet on campus. Our ability to help our students is only effective when we build a positive advisor-advisee rapport. In fact, research shows that advising is a collaborative process that involves both the advisor and the advisee. Therefore, it is most effective when both the advisor and advisee are mutually engaged in the advising process. However, advisors sometimes find difficulties in engaging with their advisees due to a lack of rapport. This presentation will address such an issue by examining Relational Cultural Theory (RCT) as a tool for advisors to engage with their advisees and build a positive advisor-advisee relationship. In this presentation, the audience will 1) learn about 'Connected Advising' as informed by RCT, 2) explore the importance of mutually growth-fostering relationships, and 3) strategies and techniques to implement RCT in their academic advising practice. |
