Title: Radical Rapport: The Power of Human Connection in Self-Care and Resilience
Lead Presenter: Brighton Brooks
Date: October 06, 2021    Time: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Room: 207/208, DECC
Abstract: In this unique pre-conference session participants will engage all of their senses to deeply investigate how we make connections in everyday life and how those connections provide critical support for learning and resilience both on campus and online.

Higher education professionals can make a significant impact on student success and advisor retention through establishment of meaningful, personal connections. Rapport is needed to create inclusive environments that welcome all staff, faculty, and students which we can model with nonverbal behavior and active listening skills.

A variety of exercises will actively engage participants in effective ways to connect with people, establish rapport, and build resilience. These guided activities, including eye contact, body mirroring, guided visualization, storytelling, and touch are informed by counseling techniques, dance/movement therapy, and polyvagal and attachment theories. Research and theory will be addressed and resources provided for further exploration. Accessible alternatives will be offered for each activity and adaptation to virtual spaces will be discussed. Special attention will be paid to the complex nature of intersectional identities and cultural humility in nonverbal communication. Small group sharing and self-reflection will facilitate integration.

Participants can expect to gain a better understanding of their nonverbal patterns and biases in order to become more adaptable and inclusive at home and at work. Take-aways include several connection-making and self-care activities designed to ignite their passion and promote ongoing personal and professional development.
