Abstract: Is your institution searching for new ideas about job descriptions, performance evaluation, or promotion of academic advisors? Whether you focus on one aspect or all, join us for an in-depth discussion and workshop focusing on the solution of one large, public university with decentralized advising.

Our university undertook a comprehensive review of the academic advising position, prompting significant changes in job descriptions, salary, promotion requirements, and the performance evaluation plan.

The committee focused on developing a system that:
- Centered on essential functions outlined in the job descriptions for advisors
- Fostered in-depth discussions of job performance, including both HOW advisors complete their jobs and WHAT they complete
- Established clear links between performance and core advising values
- Provided ongoing documentation of advisor accomplishments and performance needed to support promotion and merit-based raises

The new system strengthens conversations between advisors and administrators and provides clear guidance for promotion. We will provide information, tools, and guidance for other institutions seeking to improve advisor evaluation and promotion processes.

Presenters come from advising and human resources. We will cover core values, the relationship between values and job functions, the evaluation workbook, rubrics used to measure performance, and the direct connections among job descriptions, performance, and promotion. You will generate core value(s) and rubric examples tailored to your institution. You will complete the supervisor training used to standardize performance evaluation ratings. Our extensive discussions will include your questions and our lessons learned.
