Title: Appreciative Advising and its Relationship to Community College Students' Intent to Persist
Lead Presenter: Jim Disrude
Date: October 08, 2021    Time: 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Room: 263, DECC
Abstract: More than half of the students who started this year at a community college will not return to the same institution next year. This persistent retention problem negatively impacts students, institutions, and society-at-large. The Appreciative Advising Model (AAM) may be uniquely suited to promoting student persistence. Employing the AAM, advisors use open-ended questions to uncover students' dreams and then co-construct a plan to achieve those dreams.

This presentation will share the findings from a dissertation that examined the implementation of the AAM at a community college and its relationship to persistence. During this interactive session, attendees will gain a better understanding of the model's influence on persistence, as well as receive a toolkit for implementing these innovations in their context.
